Have you ever said ‘It’s too late for me, my time has passed, if I couldn’t do it then I can’t do it now? Or maybe, ‘It’s too difficult for me so I don’t think I’ll try’?
This week I assessed the MOST amazing and inspiring adult who has left a massive mark on me. I’ve found myself thinking of her story and admiring the new narrative that she has written for herself. Her education and life had not been easy, the odds rarely in her favour. After moving through many schools and constantly being told she would amount to very little. She left school with few qualifications but on leaving school has never been out of work.
She survived by embracing and utilising her strengths; talking, resilience, thinking calmly on her feet and being incredibly resilient. A grafter for sure. When becoming a parent, determined to ensure her children didn’t struggle in the same way, she fought hard to provide chances and opportunities for her children that she did not have.
I was humbled to assess this person and the quote that stuck with me is, ‘I have to practise what I preach, even if it’s difficult, and set my children an example – I can’t ask them to do something I wouldn’t do myself.’
The adult I assessed has signed up to and started a course to make her dream career choice a reality; she is training to be a paramedic. The studying has been, and continues to be, tough but she has shown resilience and found ways to overcome difficulties and developed complicated mechanisms to access course content and not being scared to seek help and support when needed.
It’s NEVER too late to change your story or to write another narrative, but it takes determination, resilience, guts and admitting you might need some help! I feel so grateful that I am able to support people in the way that I do and can be a small part of their journey to success.
