What would happen if all independent dyslexia screeners and assessors stopped assessing?
Do you think this would force the government, local authorities and schools to actually provide a service or would it make the problem worse?
It’s a dilemma for sure but one I think worthy of discussion.
Recently I’ve come across a lot of judgement that independent assessors and screeners over charge for dyslexia assessment and this should be a FREE or very cheap service.
Maybe some do over charge, maybe some are cashing in on the vulnerable.
In my own personal circumstance and many assessors I know and respect, that really isn’t the case.
They and I are independent because we have been forced out of local authority roles or schools.
We are providing a voice and much needed gap in service. Who would advocate for these children or adults if we didn’t provide that diagnosis and support?
It is so morally wrong that not everyone has access to a dyslexia assessment and diagnosis, but that isn’t necessarily our fault as assessors.
Maybe it’s problem that lies at the governments door.
They are the ones with the power and responsibility to find ways to provide equal opportunity for all… change has to come from the top.
Culturally there needs to be a shift… I don’t even think it’s about diagnosis and assessment.
It’s about accepting and looking at what people need rather than linking support to a diagnosis, getting rid of that part of the process altogether.
I truly hope that one day there will be no need for me to be an independent assessor anymore, because schools provide that service to anyone who needs it.
But in the meantime do people really think independent assessors should work for free, or stop serving people because it’s unfair it isn’t available to everyone?
I would love to know your thoughts on this as I believe it to be a very important topic on conversation…
