Do you have back to school worries? Check out my top back to school dyslexic tips to ensure a smooth transition…

✏️ Have spares of all equipment… (including PE kit, maths kit and calculators) I would always have a cheap second hand one in the wardrobe just in case.

💼 School bag. The size is important, not too big, but helpful to have compartments. If no compartments having folders to help organise makes a big difference.

🕰️ When they get their timetable… often digital now, but also have a hard copy! photocopy or photograph it so you have a spare copy if they forget or loose it. We also used to print one out and have one on the wall so they could look as many times as needed.

👕Know when PE days are or days that will need different equipment so you can remind them.

📝 Create a checklist and have it by the front door so they can check it each day and become independent and hopefully minimise any dyslexic errors.

📉 If your child has a formal dyslexia diagnosis and report, after the first few days resend a copy to the year head and senco… just to ensure they have a copy.

🚌 Practise any routine in advance such as travel or walking to identify any pinch points or iron out any issues in advance to support anxiety. Also talk through a back up plan in case they miss the bus… as in what do they do? Go back to school, call you?

🧍🏻 As soon as you can in the first week help your young person identify who will be their support in school when they feel overwhelmed! Is it a form teacher, someone they happen to know from transition, the receptionist? Have a proactive plan in place.
