I am owning my dyslexic parenting wins.
It’s been an emotional few weeks in my world because we are entering a new era of parenting.
As we watch our kids become young people and own the paths they choose to tread, different from each other but with so much confidence and vigour, I have realised how much my undiagnosed dyslexia held me back and shaped me as a teenager and how the loss of my husbands father at 19 kept our world small for a bit.
At their age I wanted to be invisible. I didn’t believe in myself. I felt unintelligent and stupid and not capable. I was going through the motions of life, complying, people pleasing and doing the best I could but never believing in myself.
My husband stayed close to his family and we built a life together that was safe, happy and full of so much love.
We used everything we had learned and experienced and knew about neurodivergence, life and parenting to ensure our kids paths would see them follow their dreams and that they would always feel like anything was possible with education being important but a small part of their overall success!
We have done that and we will continue to do that.
So very proud of the kind, brilliant people we have created and helped shape… and how they continue to move through life, turning their dreams into reality. Their resilience, kindness and work ethic and ability to make the most of every opportunity big or small.
Dyslexia and likely ADHD has and never will be something that gets in their way… it’s never needed to because they know exactly how to handle it so it isn’t the thorn in their side, simply something to navigate and find a way around.
And me… well… the trumpet player still gives me butterflies and I am learning from our kids to improve my confidence, they make me braver for sure, and for that I will always be thankful!
