I am a bit fed up with schools telling me they have no budget for SEND training.
Because it’s simply not true…whilst I agree funding is exceptionally tight they do get a budget for SEND and they can choose how they spend it. Pupil premium funding can also be used to purchase training and resources.
A trained member of staff is going help pupils with pupil premium funding but will also be able to support pupils without pupil premium funding. What a school is actually saying when they tell me they have NO budget is that SEND training isn’t their priority. Which is a prerogative response, but it’s failing at least 10 % of their school population.
What BLOWS my mind, is that surely a very limited budget needs to be spent very strategically! I would have thought sending one member of staff to a training session to develop their skills is a good use of funding.
You are in effect making a teachers job easier because you will learn how to support pupils with different needs more efficiently, being proactive rather than reactive. That member of staff that attend training can filter tips hints and support across to other teachers!
If you want to spend your school budget strategically… you need to send a member of staff to the IOW dyslexia and Dyscalculia show in NOV!
