I’m guessing you can say the alphabet… probably with your eyes closed?
Most of us can sing the alphabet song but are you singing it properly?
Do you actually know whether letters are in the first or last part of the alphabet when things are alphabetised?
Do you know the difference between yoo and doubleuu and c and s and m and n?
As a specialist teacher supporting reading and spelling skills in dyslexic learners, one of the first things we do is ask the learner to sequence the alphabet. Whether they are 6 or 66 and you would be amazed at how many people can’t actually sequence it correctly and don’t know the names of all the letters. I have lost count of the amount of times I have had a learner get to the letter k and stop and stare as they search for the letter lemopee!
How can we begin to develop reading and spelling skill if we are not sure of this knowledge?
Understanding letter names and sounds is the essential foundation to reading and spelling. There are so many activities you can do with the alphabet. Sometimes we overlook the simple things – and it’s these things that can make the BIG difference!
